Website Redesign or Rebuild? (Here's the Honest 30-Second Test)

Your website's tired but you're not sure if it needs new paint or a full rebuild. Here's how to tell — honestly, without the sales pitch.

The 30-second test

Answer three questions:

  1. Does the site load in under 3 seconds on mobile?
  2. Can you edit content yourself without a developer?
  3. Would you be proud to hand a business card with the URL to a stranger?

If you answered no to any of these, you need at least a redesign. If you answered no to two or more, you probably need a full rebuild.

Redesign vs rebuild — the honest difference

Redesign

What it is: keeping the underlying platform and structure, updating the visual design, copy, and possibly navigation.

Cost: 40–60% of a rebuild.

Timeline: 1–3 weeks.

When to choose: the current site's tech is fine but it looks dated, the content is stale, or the navigation confuses visitors.

Rebuild

What it is: starting from scratch — new platform, new structure, new design, new content, new everything.

Cost: full custom pricing (often $2,000–$10,000+ traditional agency, or $197–$500 productised).

Timeline: 2–12 weeks depending on scope.

When to choose: the platform is old, the code is bloated, mobile is broken beyond fixing, or the business has genuinely changed since the site was built.

The 6 signs you need a full rebuild

  1. It's on a platform you can't update yourself
  2. Mobile is genuinely broken (test it right now on your phone)
  3. Load speed is over 5 seconds (test at pagespeed.web.dev)
  4. Your business has substantially changed since the last build
  5. Site hasn't been updated in 2+ years
  6. You can't remember your admin login or reach the old developer

The 4 signs a redesign is enough

  1. The site loads fast and works on mobile, but looks dated
  2. Your services are the same, but the copy is stale
  3. The structure is right, but the design feels like 2019
  4. You can log in and update it — you just don't like how it looks

If all four apply, redesign. Cheaper, faster, same buyer perception improvement.

The overlooked third option

Sometimes the best move is neither redesign nor rebuild — just a punch-list of fixes:

  • Compress big images
  • Update the hero photo
  • Fix the tap-to-call phone number
  • Update the hours
  • Add fresh testimonials

Two hours of your time can move the needle more than a $2,000 redesign for a site that's fundamentally sound.
