Most bad websites don't look bad. They just quietly lose bookings. Here's how to tell if yours is one of them — and what to fix.
1. Your phone number isn't tappable on mobile
Open your website on your phone. Try to tap your phone number. Does it dial, or does nothing happen?
70%+ of small business website traffic is mobile. If your number is text-only instead of a proper tel: link, every mobile visitor who wants to call you needs to memorise the number, close the browser, open the phone app, and type it in. Most give up.
Fix: your website builder should let you make the number a tap-to-call link. If you can't figure out how, that's a symptom of a bigger builder problem.
2. Your booking button leads somewhere confusing
Try booking from your homepage. Count the clicks. If it's more than two, you're losing bookings.
Common patterns that kill conversions:
- "Contact" button that goes to a form that emails you (silent email = silent loss)
- "Book now" that opens Fresha in a broken frame that doesn't work on mobile
- Booking widget that requires an account before showing availability
- A form buried three scrolls down
Fix: one button, above the fold, that opens your actual booking tool directly. That's it.
3. Your page takes more than 3 seconds to load
Google's own data: every second of load time above 3 seconds drops mobile conversions by 20%. A 6-second load kills more than half your traffic before they see your content.
Test yours: pagespeed.web.dev. Paste your URL. Aim for a mobile Performance score above 70.
Fix: compress images (use TinyPNG), remove background videos, kill autoplay carousels. If your builder makes this hard, switch builders.
4. Your last update was over a year ago
Visitors check. If the last blog post is from 2023, the phone number is old, the prices are outdated, or the hours are wrong — people quietly assume you might not be operating anymore.
Fix: update something monthly. Even a hours note. A small blog post. A new photo. Signal life.
5. It doesn't show up when you Google your own business name
Right now, open Google. Search your business name + suburb. Where does your website appear?
If the answer is "not on the first page" or "not at all," your foundational SEO is broken and you're losing every new customer who Googles you after a referral.
Fix: your website's title tag should include your business name + location. Meta description should be a human sentence. Set up Google Search Console (free) and submit your sitemap. This alone fixes most of it.
The bigger honest question
If your website has three or more of these problems, it's probably faster and cheaper to rebuild it than to patch it. A 24-hour SiteInADay build starts at $197 and includes all five of the above solved by default.
